What is Val d’Orcia
Medieval castles, sinuous hills, ancient villages, beautiful farmhouses, isolated farmhouses, avenues of cypresses, fabulous vineyards and olive groves, and gold-colored wheat fields: these are just some of the elements that form the fantastic and harmonious landscapes of the Val d’Orcia. Crossed by the river Orcia, from which the valley takes its name, this splendid region in the south of Tuscany winds along the provinces of Siena and Grosseto. The entire area is now a protected park, and has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2004. The absolute protagonist of the Val d ‘Orcia is in fact a still uncontaminated and beautiful nature, with always different colors depending on the various seasons.
There are very few other places capable of impressing the tourist so deeply. It is a land with an almost surreal and suspended atmosphere, which has also given rise to the most precious and appreciated Italian wines: Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso Orcia and other fabulous wines with the DOCG designation.
The beautiful landscapes of the Val d’Orcia, which inspired many Renaissance painters, are dotted with many small villages, castles, abbeys, and villages, each with its own incredible history. Time still passes slowly here. You will be able to admire and discover villages such as Pienza, a real jewel known as the “Ideal City”: a true Renaissance monument designed by Pius II, the great humanist pope, where the splendid Palazzo Piccolomini is also worth a visit.
And here is Castiglion d’Orcia with its fortress, Abbadia S. Salvatore and its ancient Benedictine abbey, Radicofani which stands on a hill overlooking the valley, with its imposing watchtower, and then Montalcino, dominated by the fortress of XIV century from which you can enjoy a unique panorama. Finally you can admire the beautiful and evocative Abbey of Sant ‘Antimo, one of the best examples of medieval monastic architecture, where you can still hear the beautiful Gregorian chants during mass. When illuminated by the sun, the magnificent travertine façade shines with golden reflections.
East of Pienza, the harmonious Renaissance town of Montepulciano is not to be missed (even if it is no longer Val d’Orcia)!
After a whole day dedicated to visiting museums, ancient castles and abbeys, you can finally relax in one of the many thermal baths in the area, such as the one in Bagno Vignoni or Bagni di San Filippo.
The whole area is incredibly rich in local products of great quality such as the fabulous pecorino di Pienza, the intense olive oil, the delicious wine, which follows a long and ancient tradition, saffron, mushrooms, truffles, game many other specialties along the Wine and Flavors Route.
A holiday in Valdorcia is a special journey made of sweet flavors and wonderful landscapes that you will never forget. The most beautiful photos of Tuscany come from this paradise!
