What is Val d’Orcia

The beautiful landscapes of the Val d’Orcia, which inspired many Renaissance painters, are dotted with many small villages, castles, abbeys, and villages, each with its own incredible history. Time still passes slowly here. You will be able to admire and discover villages such as Pienza, a real jewel known as the “Ideal City”: a true Renaissance monument designed by Pius II, the great humanist pope, where the splendid Palazzo Piccolomini is also worth a visit.

And here is Castiglion d’Orcia with its fortress, Abbadia S. Salvatore and its ancient Benedictine abbey, Radicofani which stands on a hill overlooking the valley, with its imposing watchtower, and then Montalcino, dominated by the fortress of XIV century from which you can enjoy a unique panorama. Finally you can admire the beautiful and evocative Abbey of Sant ‘Antimo, one of the best examples of medieval monastic architecture, where you can still hear the beautiful Gregorian chants during mass. When illuminated by the sun, the magnificent travertine façade shines with golden reflections.

East of Pienza, the harmonious Renaissance town of Montepulciano is not to be missed (even if it is no longer Val d’Orcia)!
